6 Tips To Get Better Halloween Pictures This Year | Atlanta Child Photographer
Want better Halloween pictures??
About a week ago I was going back through some digital images on my computer and picking some fall pictures to print in my frames that decorate the house this time of year. Looking back at these pictures a few things come to mind. First of all, like any mom, it’s always been so important to me to get pictures at Halloween. I can 100% guarantee that these very first Halloween pictures were taken with a regular digital camera on auto and probably even using a flash outside! Did it matter back then? No. Does it matter to me now? No. But I’ve learned a lot trying to get better halloween pictures, so it’s time for tip #1…
Don’t hold back if you’re not using a professional level camera, or shooting on manual. Shoot what you know with what you got. Even with an iPhone, you can get great shots if you’re in the right light. You aren’t going to be able to go back in time and get this opportunity back. This is a perfect time to practice, and you’re only going to get better.
I always dress my kids a week or so before Halloween and take them outside in the yard for some decent shots of them in their costume. Halloween night can get a little crazy and the kids are so excited they really don’t want to stop and get a picture or two. If your kids are like mine {and dare I say uncooperative in front of the camera} you might find that this tip is exactly what you need to get that framer and spend a little time on the details of those adorable costumes.
This location is in my driveway. It has the same boring trees and leaves that yours does. The sun just happens to set behind all of these trees and creates some beautiful shots. Look around for the color and the light and set yourself up there. Here is a perfect spot to take those “pre-Halloween” shots. If there are not leaves where you’d like to shoot, go find some, and bring a pile over. These leaves will also set up some fun “throwing leaves” shots.
I know you’re laughing and so am I, no one is even looking the same way, but honestly I love this picture. I worked long and hard to get these costumes together and even probably struggled to get the baby to even wear his costume. I earned this family picture. I am not in a lot of pictures as most moms are not, but someone near you can take a picture. You’ll love looking back at your family on some of your favorite Halloween nights.
Try and retell the story of the night, this looks like I may have had my camera out the entire night but this was all documented within the first few houses and then I put my camera away for a while. It will be helpful to have some daylight and it just takes a few snaps to capture it all. Get a picture of the candy, ringing the door bell, how they travel from house to house, who their besties are, and really anything you see unfolding in front of you. It will make a nice little collage or even detail pictures if you decide to make a book. Making a Shutterfly book is a great way to put all of your new better halloween pictures in one place but also to set out as your Halloween or fall decorations each year.
Look for those pretty houses that are all lit up and shoot. Set your camera to expose on those lights and Magic!
Many of these pictures are far from perfect {technically speaking} but they are perfect for me. Yours will be perfect for you too. Halloween goes quick, just like their childhood. Most kids would say that Halloween is one of their favorite nights of the year, and experiencing Halloween all over again with kids is just as magical. The joy that the kids experience from house to house makes your job with the camera pretty easy. You get a break from trying to make them laugh and be silly because the entertainment of the night is unfolding all around you. It is certainly something that I love to capture and preserve the memories of this fleeting time in their life.
Getting the costume shots before hand and capturing the details in the beginning of the night and maybe a few nighttime shots should give you plenty of time to put the camera down and enjoy a majority of the night just running around with the kids. Have fun, be safe, and share your shots! Happy Halloween Friends!
